Muscat: Touted as the technology of the future, Nawras has introduced its own brand of fixed-lines in Oman through WiMAX technology as the company starts connecting homes with broadband and voice services starting tomorrow.

"We are connecting homes through WiMAX technology but at the same time it [will be] treated as [a] fixed connection and cannot be carried around," Nawras CEO, Ross Cormack, said at a media briefing yesterday.

Nawras has done away with connecting homes through cables and are providing plug and play modem that would connect customers with the base stations.

"We will have to be informed if a customer wishes to change location of the broadband connection," Cormack said.

He also said "customers will also get voice services which will include various packages, including my favourite countries for the international calls".

"We want to give value for money," he added.

According to Peter Rubeck, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Nawras, the company had already invested over 100 million Omani riyals to set up the broadband services in the country.

Broadband future

"We have covered 2027-km area in the country with the cable network and in next five years we would have covered 5325-km of area in Oman," said Rubeck.

The Nawras CTO believes that future of broadband is with wireless technology like WiMAX.

"It is reliable and future for the telecommunications services, especially in this country," he said.

Cormack believes that by next year Nawras would have 80 per cent penetration for broadband services.
