New Delhi: The maker of BlackBerry phones may get a one or two-month extension to an August 31 deadline for it to grant Indian security agencies access to its corporate email service, a report said Friday.

India's Department of Telecommunications is "likely" to suggest an extension as phone maker Research In Motion needs time to provide access to the emails, the Business Standard reported Friday.

The proposal came after a meeting between experts from the Canadian company and Indian regulators on Thursday.

Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian company that makes the world's best-selling business smartphone, said late Thursday that it was prepared to set up an industry forum to resolve India's security concerns.

India, battling insurgencies from Kashmir in the northwest to the far-flung northeast, has raised fears that heavily encrypted BlackBerry services could be used by militants.

It has given the maker of the world's best-selling business smartphone until August 31 to provide security services with a solution.
