Riyadh:  A Saudi intellectual security researcher has warned against the negative aspects of modern technology, especially the internet and electronic games which he described as a main factor in the spread of extremism in Saudi society.

In a statement, Dr Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz Al Gufeili stressed the technology could lead users in a conservative society like Saudi Arabia to give up their moral values and run after misleading concepts which promote modernisation.

He called for strict controls on the use of the internet, particularly by children, to avoid the possibility of their being attracted to terrorist groups.

He said unless such controls were adopted, many children would fall easy prey to attempts by extremist groups to recruit new members via the internet.
