Dubai: Consumer electronics vendors are betting on a significant increase in demand for flat-panel televisions, laptops and mobile phone accessories during the annual Gitex Shopper and Consumer Electronics Expo that opens tomorrow.

The expo, which is one of the most exciting segments of Gitex Technology Week, will feature a wide array of technology products.

The gaming and shopping bonanza has enlisted over 100 exhibitors and expanded the floor space by 26 per cent over last year to reach more 34,000 square metres at the Dubai Airport Expo.

"We are expecting to see an approximate 20 per cent jump in sales during this year's Gitex Shopper," said Ashish Panjabi, chief opoerating officer of Jacky's Electronics.

"The main driver of this sales growth would probably be from categories like flat-panel televisions [TVs], notebooks, Blu-Ray models and from the mobile phone category," Panjabi told Gulf News.

Jacky's will transport nearly 200 flat-panel TVs to the exhibition area and unveil dozens of new laptops and Blu-Ray models for the first time.

The organisers also said that other major consumer electronics companies will debut a raft of exciting products.

Gaming activities

The organisers plan several gaming activities including tournaments, a console-based gaming area, live entertainment and interactive promotional stands from sponsors and exhibitors.

They have lined up several promotions such as the Gitex Mega Draw, which will raffle away a range of prizes like Renault Safrane, Samsung Home Theatre & Plasma, Nokia mobile phones, laptops, JVC camcorders, Canon cameras, Sony PS3 consoles and Mashreq Millionaire certificates.

"The enduring success of Gitex Shopper is proof that the show offers truly special deals, promotions and a visitor experience unmatched by any other IT retail events," said Helal Saeed Al Marri, director-general of Dubai World Trade Centre.

"We are delighted with continued support from the industry, which reaffirms our position as the Gulf's leading retail consumer technology platform," he said.

Gitex Shopper will be held at Dubai Airport Expo from tomorrow to October 24.

The show timings are 11 am to 10pm from tomorrow to October 23 and from 3pm to 10pm on October 24. Tickets to the event will cost Dh20 per head per entry.
