  • Hundreds of people queue to buy the new Samsung Galaxy S4 at Dubai Mall on Saturday. Only 300 customers were able to get the new smartphone.

Dubai: Retailers are witnessing a bigger demand for BlackBerry’s Q10, which goes on sale on Tuesday, than HTC One.

Among the flagship models launched — Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One — on Saturday, retailers are facing a shortage due to strong demand.

“S4 has been good so far, much better than HTC One. We got less stocks of HTC than S4 and pre-bookings for Q10 are better than HTC One,” Neelesh Bhatnagar, CEO at Emax, told Gulf News.

Right now, only pre-booked customers are able to get their hands on the flagship models.

“Pre-bookings have been good but there is an issue of stocks. The stock allocations for S4 and HTC One have been poor right from the beginning,” said Nadeem Khanzadah, head of retail at Jumbo Electronics.

Jumbo is witnessing strong pre-bookings for Q10 and S4 compared to HTC One. Jumbo had 100 pre-bookings for the S4, around 60 for the HTC One and close to 90 for Q10.

“Neither HTC nor Samsung have been clear on the next stock allocations. We are negotiating with these companies on the stocks to get more allocations. We don’t have a single piece of S4 and HTC One. On Monday, we will come to know exactly when we will get the stocks,” Khanzadah said.

Gift voucher

Hundreds of people lined up outside the Samsung brand shop in Dubai Mall on Saturday to buy the S4. To reward its loyal consumers, Samsung Gulf Electronics presented the first 200 customers to buy Galaxy S4 with a gift voucher for Dh444 on their next purchase.

Only 300 customers were able to get the new smartphone.

“S4 went on sale on Saturday and all the stocks were given to only pre-booked customers,” said Ashish Panjabi, chief operating officer at Jacky’s Electronics.

“The turnout from our loyal consumers this weekend was fantastic; it is so encouraging to see that people in the UAE are responding well to the S4 and we really value their dedication to be the first to get their hands on the new device,” said Hayssam Yassine, Head of Telecommunications Group at Samsung Gulf Electronics.

According to Deepak Babani, CEO at Eros Group, sole distributor for Samsung smartphones in the UAE, one of the reasons for the delay in stock allocation is due to the shortage of chipsets.

“Samsung is not committing anything on stocks but said that it will be able to give supplies every two to three days. We delivered around 5,000 units to the retailers on Friday morning and every unit was sold out in four hours on Saturday. Even we did not get the quantity we asked for,” he said.

Going forward, Khanzadah said that BlackBerry and Samsung will fight it out. HTC One will do better than its previous models.

You can call it any word you want, Phenomenon or not, but people try to put themselves on other shoes when they can't comprehend, understand or are being outdo by others. Your likes and dislikes, desires and self-satisfaction can't be applied to other human beings. We are all created unique, you can't impose your own will to others. In short, mind your own business, they came to queue knowing they would endure and spend a stressful time. It's a test of so-called Golden Rules - "PATIENCE". If you need something, invest your sweat & blood to get it. Personal satisfaction than those who sit and do nothing.

To each his own! If you can't understand a phenomenon then why bother making negative comments about it?

Did you know that you can pay to get twitter followers from some PR companies? You can also buy likes for your page on facebook if you wanted, and a trending PR stunt is to pay to get people to line up for a new product to make the Photo shoot look pretty and get others excited. Like the herd or mob mentality, once the sheep start running they all get on the wagon.

I have got mine Samsung S4 from Mall of the Emirates on Friday early morning. After visiting few shops where everyone said they don't have stock I finally found it in Plug-ins. And they also had got only 8 pieces. I think I just got lucky, because in front of me the sold all the stock within 30 minutes. For the future, before announcing something, sellers have to make sure they have got enough stock to satisfy all the clients.

Can not understand the craze. I believe it's more like emulating the Americans waiting outside the Apple stores to grab the latest gizmo, to be seen at the launches to get free coverage (publicity).

@Jeymer, this is much better than the situation in states where people have sleepovers outside the apple store for iPhone launch!

" A very strange phenomenon that I have not seen in many other places. " It's common for Gadgets frenzy people and specially if the first 200 were supposed to get Dh 444...Gift voucher......

When Samsung has come up with additional features for example the 8 core processor & any object touch (not restricted with finger anymore) display technology in hardware & the most advanced UI which definitely Iphone or any other mobile manufacturers yet to build so this kind of queue is normal because people who are geeks willing to show off they are first to grab one this queue is similar to Iphone stores when Apple launches its iphones like in China , Japan , USA or any other countries we may have seen several media articles on long queues & out of stock stories for iphone as well. It is upto peoples choice to wait in queue or not.

@jaymer: its not about boring life or being stupid waiting in line for a product. getting hands on first on a new product is desire of millions. its passion for a certain product. I would have joined the line myself ;) but didn't have $$$
