The RE, a mini action camera, was unveiled by HTC on Wednesday this week, marking the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer's first entry into the portable action-camera category.

The waterproof camera features a unique cylindrical design and at first glance could very well be mistaken for an asthma inhaler. It does look quite odd initially though it feels extremely natural and comfortable when in use.

The camera also features a built-in grip sensor that automatically activates the device as soon as you pick it up. Since HTC have eliminated the need for a power button, the minimalistic design continues with only two other buttons, one to capture images and video, and the other for slow-motion recording.

The RE features a high-resolution, 16MP CMOS sensor, 1080p Full HD video recording, a 146-degree wide-angle lens and a time-lapse recording feature as well.

Speaking about the camera during its launch, Jason Mackenzie, President, HTC Americas, said: "Because HTC is a mobile company, the RE was designed to be mobile. In fact, unlike other products there is no PC required. We built an app specifically for RE that works not only with HTC smartphones but any of the latest Android smartphones... and the iPhone."

Control

Users have the option to control the camera through a remote live view-finder via RE app, and stores your media directly onto your device. HTC have also confirmed that the RE will also offer real-time video streaming in the near future, in a collaboration with YouTube.

The RE and the RE mobile application will be compatible with all Android smartphones and iPhones, and the camera will be available in the UAE for approx. Dh840 from mid November onwards.
