Dubai: Microsoft is offering Windows for free for other equipment manufacturers that are nine-inches or smaller to grab more market share and save from falling PC sales.

Daniel Gleeson, mobile analyst at IHS Electronics and Media, said that the move is a significant step away from the heritage of the company which was built on the strength of its Windows licences.

“We are a company transforming and are moving in a direction with a new CEO. Our strategy is around devices and cloud. When it comes to cloud, we want to enable our eco-systems and other eco-systems,” Samer Abu Ltaif, Microsoft Gulf’s Regional General Manager, told Gulf News..

“We are well positioned to build the infrastructure to enable cloud services around the globe.

We want to make sure that other developers have access to Windows eco-system,” he said.

He said the move is absolutely to grab more market share.

“We are definitely conscious of the fact that there is a revolutionary change happening in the PC industry. So, there is a change which Microsoft needs to tackle the market share, growth and the opportunities that exists. All these developments need revolutionary change from our approach,” he said.
