Dubai: I was not really thrilled about the idea of using yet another instant messaging application, but finding an app that lets you use your web cam during IMing got my attention.

ooVoo is a instant messaging application very similar to AIM or Google messenger with a lot of the same features, but unlike a lot of instant messaging apps, ooVoo integrates the ability to use a web cam directly into the software. For those of us who have an integrated web cam on our laptops and have never found a use for it, the software offers some possibilities.

ooVoo keeps in mind that people often maintain several chats simultaneously. You can actually run up to three concurrent video sessions for free. If you want to pay an additional $5 a month, you can have up to six concurrent video sessions. You can even use it for video conferencing.

The site also has some fun features, for those of you who like to be silly. The site allows you to play with the video, so you can add glasses, a mustache or just a different background to your image.

The software also allows for video email, although the messages are limited to one minute in length. I find that a little annoying, but given broadband and storage considerations, I don't blame ooVoo for putting some limits in place.

Now, some of you are probably think that ooVoo might be a good alternative to Skype, which is currently banned in the UAE. Sorry folks, while ooVoo does allow you to use you computer to make phone calls, the software will only allow you to call Canada and the United States.

The site also has some additional features which makes setup easy, such as searching your email connects to find friends who already have the service. The app works with Outlook too. An Apple version, which is still in beta testing, is available.
