Apple unveils the iPhone 5 in the US on Wednesday, but most Gulf News readers are not too keen about the latest release, which is expected to hit UAE markets in the first week of October.

When Gulf News asked if its readers were looking forward to the release, Filipino national Christian Braganza responded with a resounding no.

The Dubai resident said: “iPhone 5 then 6, 7, 8! Overrated — that’s all I can say. The only thing Apple made that was really significant is the iPod.”

Gulf News reader Fatima Suhail said that she expected the price of the new device to be a concern.

The Pakistani national said: “I have always wished to own an iPhone, but it’s quite highly priced. Most people earn a monthly salary of Dh4,000-Dh5,000 and it is a dream for them to afford such an expensive gadget. The iPhones are meant for a selected, niche segment of people and not everybody can own one.”

Ranking

Apple currently does not rank number one on Forbes’ list of ‘The world’s most innovative companies 2012’. It is now in the 26th position, compared to 2011 where it ranked fifth.

The competition is only getting tougher for the tech giant, according to Purvi Gokhani, an Indian national.

The Abu Dhabi resident posted in a comment on Gulf News’ Facebook page: “We are actually looking forward to the release as want to buy a new smartphone. But the way Apple ethics go, following the Apple vs. Samsung case, I think I’d simply go for the Samsung Galaxy S3. As such, it has far more to offer than iPhone 4S, and even if iPhone 5 is better in its specs, I expect it to still have a smaller screen.”

Still, not everyone is expecting disappointment on the iPhone front.

Apple fan Freie, a Gulf News reader, said in a comment on Gulf News’ Facebook page: “Can’t wait!”
