Dubai: Du sees a bright future in digital services and the growth is expected to be substantial.

Despite fall in voice and SMS revenues, data revenues are gaining traction for telecom operators.

“We are not looking to invent new things. We are looking to leverage the leading-edge technologies that are getting applied around the world,” said Jawad Shaikh, executive vice-president of digital business at du.

Du sees digital services at two levels. The first aspect is transforming customers to interact with the operator digitally and through apps instead of calling the call centre. The second is to offer a suite of smart services for consumers and residents of the UAE that goes beyond connectivity and to enhance the aspects of their life on a day-to-day basis.

“We are looking at multiple verticals in bid to bring value to consumers and enterprises. With our new wearables-as-a-service offering, du’s business customers can use APX Labs’ Skylight platform to achieve cost savings and provide through-the-glass hands-free access to information, interaction and instructions to monitor their businesses more closely and establish a more productive workforce,” he said.

The operator plans to utilise wearable glasses like Google Glass and Epson Glass to boost efficiency in the workplace.

It is currently in the incubation stage and may take some time but “wearables are the next frontier in technology,” he said.

The telecom operator is also looking at connected classrooms, health care and mobile money transfers as Internet of Things and machine-to-machine gains traction.
