Dubai: Souq has launched a new range of Amazon products on its website, in the first real move to integrate the services since the American eCommerce giant acquired Souq in May.

In a Facebook post by Ronaldo Mouchawar on August 24, the founder and CEO of Souq announced that AmazonBasics would be available immediately for sale on the Souq website.

AmazonBasics is the US company’s own brand range of affordable items, ranging from laptop bags, to electronic cables and passport holders. Most items range between Dh20 and Dh50.

In his post on the social network, Mouchawar said that AmazonBasics offered a “great selection of best in class products at very affordable prices”.

The UAE site only has 72 products currently available, compared to the US version which has thousands.

Since the estimated $600 million (Dh2.2 billion) deal was announced on March 28, details on the technical aspects of how the two platforms will merge have been scarce.

It is unclear, for example, if or when customers in the region will be able to order items from across Amazon’s website.

Regarding integration, Mouchawar told Gulf News in May that the two companies “will have a series of activities that will come up soon”.

“We are in the planning phase right now, going step-by-step,” he added.

Amazon acquired the Dubai-founded online marketplace in March for an unspecified amount. The acquisition is expected to allow Amazon, which has never done any business in the Middle East, to immediately begin trading on a well established, market-leading platform.
