It’s more critical than ever to have the right strategy and technology in place to stay secure, Microsoft security head said.

Ann Johnson, Vice-President for Strategic Enterprise and Cybersecurity at Microsoft Corporation, told Gulf News that it is even more important to acknowledge business continuity and disaster response as vital components an organisation.

“I do think AI is going to make a change. We have put a lot of machine learning techniques into play. With AI, we can get smarter as we can get predictive about attacks and we can also model scenarios. We can be predictive about what kind of entities might be next that are most vulnerable. AI has so much promise for security. It will be a step change but what worries me is that the bad guys also have AI.

“We are worried about malware becoming adaptive and wild. Considering what the bad guys are going to do with AI, we have to stay one step ahead of them,” she said.

“I think we are making the bad guys work very hard. We are driving up the cost of an attack and return on investment. With better controls in place, the technologies are becoming too expensive for the bad guys. They [bad guys] are becoming more persistent. They are trying advanced tools and keep banging on the door to find the softness.

“But I actually don’t believe that the bad guys are ahead of us. I think the visibility that is given, when you have a compromise is such as though they are winning the battle, but they aren’t,” she said.
