Dubai: The Japanese consumer electronics giant is entering the highly competitive regional smartphone segment with new models in June.

Kazuhiro Tsuga, president of Panasonic Corporation, said the smartphone business or mobile phone business was originally concentrated only in the Japanese market.

“Working together with NTT Docomo, it was very profitable and a big business. But when it shifted to smartphones, we got a sort of rate cut and finally decided to stop the business. But at the same time, we made a different approach in India market. Now our new smartphone business is getting expanded,” he said.

The company has already launched some of its models in South Africa.

“We are working closely with Qualcomm, Broadcom and MediaTek chipmakers for our smartphones. We have Windows portfolio in our portfolio but currently our focus will be on Android phones,” Tsuga said.

The company did not disclose more details about the phone launch but aid that it will be a “major launch”.
