Dubai: Shoot now and focus later is the new mantra in digital photography. Lytro Illum is the first high-end camera to harness the entire light field — to retain the richness and depth of a scene.

Distinctly different from the traditional cameras, Lytro’s concept of “Living Pictures”, using the Light Field Technology, pushes shutterbugs to experiment with diverse images, whether it is the rugged beauty of nature or a defining moment at a wedding.

It allows both the taker and the viewer to refocus pictures after they’re snapped, to reorient the scene by shifting the perspective view, and even to switch between 2D and 3D views to breathe life into the picture.

It is priced at Dh4,999 but for Gitex, National Store is selling it for Dh3,999 and available at Al Falak and Sharaf DG outlets.

Ashok Vannarath, Business Development Manager, Lytro at National Stores, said that it is not a normal camera as they only capture 2D images. Illum captures 3D pictures on a single lens and lets the photographer adjust the depth of field after the picture has been taken. After downloading the image to the PC, users can create animations, depth of field and play around with the image.

With the free Lytro Desktop software, he said that users can export as many images with different emotions from a single image.

It extends from 30-250mm and shoots at f/2 but it cannot replace a DSLR.

“A stand-alone 30-250mm f/2 lens alone costs more Dh10,000 and the aperture can be changed to f/1 using the software. A stand-alone f/1 lens costs more than Dh13,000,” Vannarath said.
