A new online food wholesale store has launched in the UAE, promising to offer discounted prices for businesses catering to both suppliers and buyers.

Launching at this year’s Gulfood, the co-founder of iGOless.com says that the platform is the first of its kind in the region.

“We are catering specifically for this kind of thriving industry,” said Tuya Miari, who helped found iGOless. Miari is also managing partner of Rich House Foods.

She said in a statement: “Our site’s primary function and goal is reducing food wastage through bridging the gap between both vendors and wholesale recurring consumers via an open-access platform offering considerable discounts on wholesale food supplies with close to expiry dates.”

The UAE government aims to recycle 75 per cent of food wasted by 2021. Globally, about $1 trillion worth of food is wasted yearly, equivalent to 1.5 per cent of the worldwide economy, the statement said.

At a recent food awareness session in Dubai hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, it was estimated that there is $4 billion (Dh14.69 billion) in yearly food waste in the UAE, compared to the $2.6 trillion (Dh9.5 trillion) in annual food waste globally.

“While we support changing the mindset to tackle the UAE’s food waste issue, iGOless aims to also save cost on both parties and ease the wholesale purchase and delivery process through its complete e-commerce module. Our platform is built on quality, innovation and trust serving chefs and food and beverage businesses across the UAE,” Miari added.
