Dubai: When most of the Android manufacturers shifting to unibody design, LG is the last company standing to offer a removable battery in its flagship smartphone G4.
The G4 has a removable back and the first smartphone to use Quantum Dot technology to produce high contrast, vibrant images rich in colour and details.
Quantum Dots are just a new film added to an LED screen to produce deeper, brightness and richer colours and to withstand the challenge posed by OLED technology.
D.Y. Kim, President LG Electronics, Gulf FZE, said on the sidelines after launching the device, that the new screen technology offers 20 per cent greater colour reproduction, 25 per cent improvement in brightness and 50 per cent greater contrast.
The device has a bigger battery size of 3000mAh to power the screen and run the device for more than one day.
“It is the first Quad HD display to employ Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology, which combines the LCD and touch sensor into a single layer to provide better colour reproduction and touch sensitivity,” he said.
The G4 boast of 538 dots per inch (dpi) screen density compared to Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus has 401 pixels per inch; HTC One M9’s 441 ppi while Samsung Galaxy S6 has 577 dpi.
The 5.5-inch device is powered by Snapdragon 808 chip set which offers 1.82GHz dual-core Cortex-A57 & quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 processors. It sports 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage capacity and can be expanded up to 128GB using microSD card slot.
It houses 16MP rear and 8MP front-facing cameras.
The G4 comes in two versions and with different colours. It is available in handcrafted and genuine full grain leather in six colours — brown, black, red, sky blue, beige and yellow — and pure ceramic white with 3D patterns, artisan-forged metallic grey and shiny gold.
The leather version is priced at Dh2,799 while the ceramic version is priced at Dh2,699 and will be available in June.
Sang Rhee, general manager of mobile division at LG Gulf, said that the screen is slightly curved to help the phone survive when dropped without smashing the screen.
He said the G4 camera features a F1.8 aperture lens which allows 80 per cent more light to hit the image sensor than in the LG G3 and a colour spectrum sensor which recognises the light and the object.
The fifth largest smartphone manufacturer sees the market to be tough with heavy competition and many models launching in the market at the same time.
“We will survive and with G4, we will be a big winner this time. Our G series have been a success so far. We can compete with the top two rivals in the premium segment and the Chinese players in the mid to low-end segment. The Chinese players are good in some segments and we are good in some segments,” Kim said.
Kim expects G4 and its sister products to be launched soon to contribute around 50 per cent growth in the premium segment compared to last year.
