LG Electronics stole the show on Tuesday before the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show with its new Ultra HD high dynamic range-enabled OLED TV that has a frame that’s just 2.57 millimetres thick — about the width of four stacked credit cards.

The South Korean giant showed its all-new Signature series of smart products — smart TVs to refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers and air purifiers — at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

David VanderWaal of LG Electronics US said that LG’s OLED TVs eliminate anything unnecessary, essentially making its television the perfect picture on glass.

He said that each OLED TV comes standard with Dolby surround sound and has ultra-high definition (UHD) certification. The unit comes equipped with an embedded sound bar speaker developed in partnership with high-end audio pioneer Harman/Kardon.

VanderWaal said that LG Signature delivers a perfect picture of OLED TV on an elegant, glass body. “Quite literally, ladies and gentlemen, it’s picture on glass.”

The G6 [77-inch and 65-inch] is expected to go on sale later this year and will be available in both 65 and 77-inch screen sizes.

The entire line-up consists of eight new models in flat and curved configurations and various sizes.

VanderWaal said that LG’s entire OLED line-up is expected to be among the industry’s first to be certified as “Ultra HD Premium,” meeting the stringent premium performance requirements just released by the UHD Alliance, which consists of TV manufacturers, broadcasters and content providers.

“The Ultra HD Premium certification applies only to products that meet the most demanding performance standards for resolution, peak luminance, black levels, wide colour gamut and audio quality, among other criteria,” he said.

LG 2016 OLED TV line-up supports the industry-standard HDR formats established by the world’s leading broadcasters, film studios and consumer electronics manufacturers, such as HDR10 and DolbyVision HDR technology, making them among the first to be compatible with all formats.

With 10-bit panel and 10-bit processing power, he said that LG’s OLED TVs can render more than a billion possible colour variations.

The entire 2016 OLED TV line-up features the newest generation of LG’s WebOS Smart TV platform — WebOS 3.0 — with advanced new features make finding and switching between LG’s expanded content options — including broadcast TV, streaming services and external devices — simple and fast.

LG also showcased its advances in LCD TVs with a premium designation called “LG SUPER UHD” TV. Each of three new LG Super UHD TV series for 2016 is HDR compatible and includes Dolby Vision HDR technology.

To make HDR streaming contents available to consumers, LG has teamed up with major global content providers including Netflix, Dolby and Amazon.

Even though the TV was the highlight, the company’s Door-in-Door smart refrigerator also was a head turner.

The fridge allows users to knock on the door, which enables a transparent surface to allow customers to peer inside the refrigerator without having to open the door, offering significant energy savings by limiting cold air loss.

Even more innovative is the new Auto Door Open feature which automatically opens the door when an individual approaches the refrigerator, allowing for quick and easy access even if your arms are full of groceries.

LG Signature products will begin rolling out in key target markets in North America, Europe and Asia soon after CES.
