Dubai: A number of mobile phone users won’t be able to access Facebook’s popular messaging application this week.

The social media network giant has started sending out notifications to announce that some subscribers will no longer be able to send and receive messages. The change is expected to impact Facebook users who own older smartphones or devices that run on Windows 8.1.

“We regret to inform you that at the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you cannot send and receive messages,” a Facebook email, which has been circulated in social media, reads.

“To continue to send and receive messages from Facebook on your phone, update your Facebook app to the latest version,”

Users who own iPhone and Android devices, however, may not be affected by the change. The messaging app has so far logged more than one billion active users a month.
