Dubai: Dubai-based technology company Eurostar is exploring opportunities to launch wearable devices, big-screen tablets and with dual-boot facilities to grab bigger pie of the market and boost revenues.

“We will be launching smartwatches and will come into the market shortly. We are surveying these kinds of markets. The market is moving towards wearables, but it is not a mass market,” Yousuf Saidi, chief operating officer at Eurostar Group, told Gulf News.

He said the current market for wearable devices is for early adopters. “We are working on a global ecosystem that will make the wearable technology having value and meet consumers’ needs.”

Making technology for technology is useless for us as “we cater to the masses”.

The outlook for tablet business is very bright as everybody cannot afford Samsung and Apple tablets, he said and added that there is a segment for low-cost tablets and there is still room for growth in low-cost tablet segment.

With Microsoft coming back into the game, he said, “we believe is a good opportunity to sustain the momentum and to have compatibility with smartphones and computers.”

There are various price segment people; he said that some look for the low-cost and some look for value-added features at good price. So as a vendor, “we need to cater to all price segments”.

Now, he said that some are even looking for different colours.

“We see the market moving towards the 3G side. As data packages are becoming affordable, consumers prefer 3G a value-added feature,” he said.

Attractive prices

Attracting consumers is by offering “attractive prices with value-added features”.

Eurostar has launched four ePad tablet models at Gitex with 3G facility.

Quoting a research firm GfK report, he said Eurostar is number three in the region after Samsung and Apple in the tablet space in terms of volume.

“Even though we are new to the tablet market, our brand carries a reputation of innovation and quality. Margins are still there in the tablet business despite stiff competition from branded vendors,” he said.

Eurostar is also looking at launching tablets with 18-inch screen size, but he said that Eurostar is very cautious.

“We are finalising the testings with Windows operating system and want to make sure that what we bring to the market has right quality,” he said.
