Dubai: It is no more a man’s world in the development of applications for mobile devices, said Boris Jebsen, CEO and founder of android developer event — droidcon.

“Now women are entering the field and I am happy to see now students are keen to enter the technology field, even at this conference,” he said.

The droidcon is a global developer conference series and a network focusing on the best of Android and is held for the first time in the Gulf in Dubai for the developers to learn new technologies and meet the international community.

Jebsen said that Dubai becomes the 24 state to hold the conference on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first conference was held in November 2009, he said and added that during that time it was only smartphones. Later, tablets came and we are now entering connected cars, smart grids and smart homes.

“Android is growing in many regions of technology and the good thing is that it is open-source software. We are encouraging women to this field and we have teamed up with Intel to invite women with free tickets and travelling expenses to bring them all over the droidcon conferences in the world to encourage innovation and creativity,” he said.

Majed Al Suwaidi, managing director of DIC and Dubai Outsource Zone, and headline partner of the event, said that Dubai is committed to developing the tech community and support start-ups and entrepreneurs.

“The governments have said that technology is at the core of our development and smart city is the way going forward. Globally, droidcon has played a major role in driving innovation within ICT and more specifically the Android sector and we feel this is a step forward in getting a large number of developers into the community,” he said.
