Dubai: Tech-savvy shoppers are gearing up for a four-day extravaganza of buzz, bargains and high energy when the fifth Gitex Shopper Spring 2017 opens its doors on Wednesday at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The event provides an additional platform for retailers to put their best foot forward in a bid to showcase the latest in consumer electronics with bundle offers and promotions.

The event brings in more than 20 leading consumer IT and electronics brands, with more than 35,000 products spread across 25,000 square metres of floor space.

The event generated sales of Dh149 million in 2016. Also, the co-located domestic appliances and home segment seeks to bring the latest in home appliances, energy-efficient white goods and smart home technology.

Smartphones are expected to be the driver for the event again, but this year is expected to see TV panels and IT deliver strong results on the back of great savings and new line-ups.

The smartphones launched this year are the Samsung A (2017) series, Huawei Mate 9 Porsche, Huawei Mate 9 Pro Honor 6x, Honor 8 Lite and HTC U Ultra.

Apple’s iPhone 7 will also be available in red, albeit in limited quantities.

“We are planning a number of different promotions this Gitex, including bundled offers and discounts. Bundled offers often are more in demand, so we will focus on giving customers a selection of products at prices they cannot resist,” said Nadeem Khanzadah, head of OmniChannel retail at Jumbo Group.

Leading retailers such as E-Max, Jacky’s Electronics, Jumbo Electronics, Plug Ins and Sharaf DG will offer a range of smartphones, laptops, tablets, HD TVs, wearables and smartwatches, digital cameras and gaming consoles.

Considering the buzz around wearable technology at this year’s Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress, Khanzadah expects to receive more customer inquiries on smart device add-ons, the popularity of which is expected to increase this year.

“We do see serious buyers coming to purchase electronics, and categories such as laptops, gaming and mobile phones are doing well thanks to some good new products. We hope to see more of impulse shoppers also increasing in the next few months as consumer confidence increases,” said Nilesh Khalkho, chief executive officer of Sharaf DG.

He said that convertible (two-in-one) and gaming laptops were the trend right now and expects these categories to do quite well — partly because of the seventh-generation Intel processors that support 4K video.

In gaming, he said that the Nintendo Switch, X-Box One S and PS4 Pro are doing well, as well as the newly launched KEF Porsche design headphones and Bluetooth speakers. He added that Apple Airpods had seen good demand.

Avinash Shanbhogue, portfolio director for events management at the DWTC, said the unique attraction at the event is the opportunity to grab “exclusive savings” through many incentives in a comparison shopper environment in particular, such as the mass of unbeatable bundle deals offered by all power retailers that aren’t readily available in malls. There will be thousands of offers, bundles and flash sales all under one roof, saving customers both time and money.

“We welcomed over 130,000 visitors to Gitex Shopper last year for 2016, our most successful turnout of visitors to date. We recorded the highest number of sales in 2015 and we are confident that with the high standard of products on offer at Gitex Shopper Spring 2017, we expect to record high footfall and sales,” he said.
