Dubai: The UAE is the home for gold and diamond-studded iPhones and it is a chance now to own a mini desktop computer covered in 18-carat solid gold.

Nigel Ransom, Regional Director at Prime Computer, Middle East and Africa, told Gulf News that the case of the limited-edition and made-to-order PC, known as Prime Gold, is made of seven kilograms of gold and sells for Dh4 million.

The Swiss company opened an office in Dubai last year to sell small and compact desktop computers in the region for businesses and governments. The rugged machines can run from 0 to 50 centigrade temperature and consumes very low power.

“We make high-quality machines so our failure rates are very low and we use fanless technology. In 2016, we haven’t had one failure. We have managed to win a lot of business and government orders in the UAE in a short period of time,” he said.

Due to the fanless technology and the practical benefit to using gold, he said that it conducts heat pretty well. So it should be as effective as aluminium in helping dissipate heat. “Prime Gold machines are handmade in Switzerland,” he said.

He added that the machines can also be customised according to customers’ needs such as a family crest or logos and in white or rose gold and with diamond buttons.

The specs are Intel Core i5 processor with 32GB of RAM and two terabytes of solid state storage capacity and all their computers come with a five-year warranty.

“We expect to sell only in tens of units and a limited market, especially for clients wanting something special,” he said.

The company had launched limited edition PCs in Switzerland but it is their first foray into precious metals.
