The Gulf News app offers people several layers of navigation and entry points to discover the news and latests updates.

Dubai: Gulf News has widened its tablet presence — it is now available for download in the Windows app store. Titled ‘GN’, it is part of the new Windows 8 launch by Microsoft.

A free app, it offers users the opportunity to get news updates as they come in. UAE, Gulf, Middle East, business, entertainment, lifestyle and sport have dedicated sections. The app works on all devices that would use Windows 8, be it personal computers or tablets.

With different display formats and navigational entry points, the app allows a user to discover a range of news items at their leisure. It follows intuitive gestures and retains as an opening point the last read page - the app remembers for the reader.

Gulf News has always pushed for innovation and to be a multi-platform news leader. The association with Microsoft Gulf is a definite step in this direction. Once the Microsoft tablet with Windows 8 is launched, gulfnews.com will be one of the eight native apps on it.

Gulf News Editor-in-Chief Abdul Hamid Ahmad said: “We are proud to be the first newspaper app from the region to be part of Windows 8. We have always done what is best for our readers. We hope that Microsoft continues to innovate and develop user experience.”

Focusing on the value placed on readers, Gulf News Managing Editor Mohammed Almezel said: “The newspaper believes in catering to the needs of its vast readership. The Windows application is a good platform for readers to get the latest news, analysis and in-depth reports we do. Our partnership with Microsoft will allow us to offer our readers good content on various platforms.”

Michael Mansour, Regional Director, Microsoft Gulf, agreed. He said: “Gulf News has been a partner to Microsoft through the years, representing a premium news leader reaching out to the Gulf communities. With Windows 8 launching, we want to provide the residents of the UAE access to media news on the latest cutting-edge technology. The Gulf News app is now in the Windows store and can be downloaded by anyone with a Windows 8 tablet or PC.

“Windows 8 will deliver a no-compromise experience on both the PC and tablet for everyone, consumers, students and IT professionals alike. We encourage everyone to begin trying out Windows 8 to get a firsthand experience of how Windows 8 gives people a beautiful, fast and fluid experience. Most importantly, Windows 8 offers the flexibility to both consume content and get productive with tools people are familiar with.”

The GN app can also be downloaded by anyone using Windows 7. However, its optimal experience would be achieved on Windows 8, with its user interface designed to function on a touchscreen device.

The app will be continually updated to ensure the progress curve is maintained and an excellent user-experience is delivered continually.
