Abu Dhabi: The UAE on Sunday called for joint action to accelerate the establishment of offices of the renewable energy agency in other countries as the pursuit of clear energy solutions continues.

The call came in Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan's address to the third session of the Preparatory Commission for the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

"We all know that we should pursue the search for clear energy solutions and implement energy efficiency measures to meet future demands. As we possess the ideal components of this approach, we are in desperate need for joint action to accelerate paces of founding Irena's headquarters, and liaison and support offices in other countries," he said.

Shaikh Abdullah paid tributes to the countries that supported the UAE's bid to host Irena's headquarters and reiterated the country's full commitment to make the agency and its efforts a success.

"The UAE is committed to providing full support to Irena to enable it to deliver its mission of securing support for renewable energy applications, assist countries to benefit from sustainable development and transfer and share expertise in technology and knowledge," he added.

Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil producer, will soon join the agency, officials announced, following a meeting of its 139 members.

"We have got official notification that Saudi Arabia will become one of the signatories of Irena," said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar.

The Preparatory Commission acts as the decision-making body until the statute comes into force after 25 ratifications.
