Dubai: Captain Aysha Al Hamili, the UAE's permanent representative on the International Civil Aviation Organisation Council, has been elected council vice-president for 2010-2011.

The decision was announced at the council's meetings in its 191st session held recently in Montreal, Canada.

The unanimous decision comes as a result of the active role played by the UAE's representative through continuous work with specialised technical committees, efforts aimed at strengthening ties in civil aviation between the UAE and many countries and successful representation of Arab interests at the ICAO.

Saif Mohammad Al Suwaidi, GCAA Director General, said that "this election comes in line with the UAE's active role in the international civil aviation sector and represents a continuation of the UAE's success in gaining the trust of most ICAO member states, which resulted in the recent re-election of the UAE to the ICAO Council."

Commitment

Al Suwaidi continued: "Headed by Captain Aysha Al Hamili, the team of the UAE's representative office at ICAO played a key role in stressing its commitment towards supporting ICAO's standards and plans in terms of safety, security and the environment and strengthening the role of Arab states in this important international organisation."

Pushing the UAE's aim for international relations, the director-general recently met Sergio Diaz-Granados, Minister of Trade, Industry and tourism of Colombia in Bogota.

They discussed the key role that air transport can play in reaching the objective of both governments to rapidly increase the trade, tourism and investment flows between the UAE and Colombia.
