Abu Dhabi: Khalifa.emarat became the first Arabic language web address in the UAE on Saturday, WAM reported.

That makes the UAE one of the four countries in the world to use domain names in non-English languages.

The website of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was launched on Saturday by Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

Lauding the efforts of Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), the ministry said the UAE domain "reflects the UAE's pride in the Arabic language and its role in Arab culture".

The domain will also convey the progress being achieved by the UAE, the ministry added.

In January, the Internet Corporation Assigned for Names and Numbers granted permission to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to use Arabic in domain names.
