City Of Life

Who’s in it? Alexandra Maria Lara, Sonu Sood, Saoud Al Kaabi

Rating: 4 stars

This re-released DVD offers extra special features for buffs of City of Life, Dubai’s first feature film, which tells three parallel stories.

There’s the privileged Emirati who finds himself on the wrong side of the tracks with his less fortunate but street-smart friend.

There’s the Romanian ballet dancer turned flight attendant, searching or love, and then a taxi driver who bears a resemblance to a famous Bollywood star. The three stories collide and the movie examines how the smallest moments can have big consequences.

The film has some weak points, but we still loved seeing our city on film. Dh60, aido.com

Covert Affairs Season 1

Who’s in it? Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham, Kari Matchett

Rating: 3 stars

Halfway through her CIA training, young operative Annie Walker (Perabo) is pulled out of the course, thrust into the centre of the agency  and is sent to work for the Domestic Protection Division.

She assumes she’s been sent due to her ability to speak six languages, but that turns out not to be the case. She is then guided through her new life – her  cover story is that she works at the Smithsonian Museum – by blind tech operative Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorham).

The fast-paced drama and likeable characters make this a watchable show, but
not a brilliant one. Dh125, aido.com
