Miles Teller stars as Andrew Neyman in Sony Pictures Classics' Whiplash (2014)

Whiplash

If you think playing the drums looks fun, think again. First time writer/director Damien Chazelle draws on his own experiences from his days in a high-school studio band. Miles Teller plays an ambitious jazz drummer trying to rise to the top of an elite music conservatory. J.K. Simmons plays his fearsome instructor who drives him to the brink of his ability and sanity.

Fearsome might be an understatement. This cat is ruthless, mean and downright sadistic. This film definitely has the potential to rack up some hardware come February 22nd. It’s nominated for best picture, best screenplay and best film editing at the Oscars. Simmons’ performance is definitely Oscar-worthy.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out Of Water

When a diabolical pirate (Antonio Banderas) steals the secret formula for Krabby Patties, SpongeBob teams up with his nemesis, Plankton, and heads ashore to get it back. Rotten Tomatoes says this one’s “not going to win over many viewers who aren’t fans”, but for SpongeBob disciples it’s another colourful burst of manic fun.

Song One

Anne Hathaway is back with a fairly unknown cast in this new rom-com in which she falls in love with the lead singer of a band while trying to help her brother out of coma.

Well, that’s not why she falls in love with him, that’s just what happens once she starts delving into her brother’s life after he’s in a car accident.

The romance looks real and Anne is very powerful in one of the more serious rom-com’s we’ve seen of late.

Wedding Ringer

America’s favourite funnyman of the moment Kevin Hart stars in this new comedy in which he is a paid-for Best Man. Turns out there are some people out there who don’t have a best friend they can turn to in their hour of need, so Jimmy (Hart) fills in the gaps.

However, when he meets Doug (Josh Gad) he needs not only a best man, but a set of seven groomsmen — cue a bunch of random guys with nothing better to do than pretend to be Doug’s best friends.

If you’re looking for some quick laughs this weekend then the Wedding Ringer is definitely your best bet.
