At one time actor Karthi was refreshing as the protagonist in his debut vehicle Paruthiveeran.

The film was a critic’s delight and clinched him the Filmfare Best Actor award. His later movies Aayirathil Oruvan and Paiyaa, while placing him firmly on a pedestal in the Tamil film industry, clearly indicated that Karthi lacked originality. He was beginning to ape his elder brother Surya by playing clichéd characters.

In Siruthai, Karthi plays two men who look alike, but are not twins or even related. One is patriotic cop Ratnavel Pandiyan, who aims to die with his uniform on, smiling. The other is Rocket Raja, a petty thief, who tricks people into parting with their precious goods.

The story takes on a more serious tone when the policeman tries to eliminate an evil don who is terrorising a village. Despite Pandiyan’s valiant efforts, the don lives on.

It’s then that Raja comes onto the scene to make a fool of the don and a mockery of the police force. He does this, often through juvenile wit that a 13-year-old may find it hard to believe.

There are also two subplots. While one is silly, the other manages to tug at your heart strings and concerns Pandiyan’s little daughter.

You can’t help but wonder why Karthi agreed to appear like this; he showed such promise earlier.
