Having never been a fan of the candy floss escapist fluff Bollywood churns out consistently, Anurag Kashyap proves that there will always be takers for his brand of cinema with his latest offering Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2.
If Part 1 was all about Sardar Khan, then the sequel is all about the rise and subsequent fall of his stoner son, Faisal Khan.
Gangs Part 2 takes off where the first part ended. Sardar’s (Manoj Bajpayee) sons take over their father’s legacy. In a turn of events that is fairly reminiscent of the Godfather trilogy, his younger son Faisal (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who is rarely seen without his chillum pipe finds himself at the helm of affairs. The rest of the story follows the rise and him avenging Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) for his killing most of his family.
Siddiqui pulls off Faisal Khan very convincingly. His wife, Mohsina (played y Huma Qureshi) is amazingly pleased being the don’s wife. Piyush Mishra, who plays Nasir, a silent spectator as well as a repository of the town’s history is a treat to watch.
The movie with a running time of a little over two and a half hours might feel a tad bit long but the tight screenplay, amazing dialogues and the very funky soundtrack keeps you glued to your seats. Folks songs have been cleverly used to carry the story forward as well keep the momentum going. The drum and bass version of “Kehke loonga” in the last scene is an absolute masterpiece.
Even though the movie has a lot of gore and violence, the social commentary through the eyes of the lens is definitely worth mentioning. There are many absolutely hilarious moments throughout the movie. Thanks to its depiction of Bihar and present day Jharkhand, it is also a great lesson in the history and politics of the region. But stay away if you don’t like blood and are uncomfortable with liberal use of unparliamentary language.
With Gangs Part 2, Kashyap proves he is the Quentin Tarantino of Bollywood and that the industry can finally make a movie in which the story is the real hero.
