Cairo: Hundreds of fans attended the funeral of Egyptian actress Faten Hamama held on Sunday after noon prayers in a mosque in Cairo.

Part of the stairway of the mosque collapsed under pressure from mourners who jostled to carry the legendary star's coffin, slightly injuring some in the incident.

Hamama, who died on Saturday aged 83, was later buried in a tomb in the suburban Cairo district of October 6.

President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi, who is now visiting the UAE, sent an envoy to the funeral.

Minister of Culture Jaber Asfur also showed up as well as several actors, including some who had worked with Hamama.

Ex-presidential candidate Amr Moussa also joined the funeral. Some members of Hamama's family were there, but not her  ex-husband Omar Al Sharif.

Chief of the Arab League Nabil Al Arabi called Hamama a "symbol of  refined Egyptian and Arab art".

"She has contributed to shaping and raising the level of Arab awareness," he said in a statement.
