Yemeni people deserve peace and they cannot wait for a permanent end to the conflict to rebuild the country
It has become clear that Yemen is marching towards the end of the rebellion. The United Nations, which is leading the peace talks, knows it, so do Yemeni people as well as Al Houthi militias and their supporters.
The resistance, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, is confidently advancing towards capital Sana’a, occupied by Al Houthis since September last year.
With that in mind, the coalition has been very restrained in its Yemen operation, to give the peace talks a chance. But it seems Al Houthis and their allies, supporters of deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh, are not interested in a political settlement. Apparently, they believe they can weather the latest offensive by the resistance. They also try, pathetically, to divert attention by launching frequent desperate attacks on Saudi border posts.
Saudi forces continue to show restraint, to help the UN reach a lasting settlement in the Yemen conflict.
The Yemeni people deserve peace. They cannot wait for a permanent end to the conflict to rebuild their country, which has been suffering from civil strife for years.
The Gulf states agreed in their summit two weeks ago to set up a fund for rebuilding Yemen. Al Houthi militias, who thrive on war, know that peace will signal the end of their tyrannical rule in Sana’a. That is why they are doing their utmost to abort all peace initiatives.
