DUBAI In a bid to cease the growing concern on obesity and diabetes among the younger generation, MPAC Sports is launching a free fitness and basketball sessions in Dubai from Thursday.

The year-long initiative will ensure kids undergo a planned fitness regime and also enjoy sessions of basketball from qualified coaches.

“After a lot of research we were shocked to find the increase in obesity and diabetes among youth in the UAE. So to help them overcome this issue we are encouraging them to come and enjoy the free sessions and be proactive,” said Ahmad Elzahdan, chief operating officer of MPAC Sports.

The sessions are open to kids between the age group of five to 18 years and will be held six days a week from 4pm to 6pm at Al Itihaad Private School in Jumeirah and Dubai Investment Park.

“For every 10 kids there will be a specialised coach. This is to ensure every kid gets complete attention. We will be focusing largely on fitness and giving them a feel of playing basketball. If they seriously want to pursue the sport in the future they can always get back to us and opt for specialised training. We have qualified basketball coaches.

“But for any sport, fitness is the key and that will be our primary goal during these free sessions,” he added.

Every one-hour session will have a capacity to accommodate 30 kids and the academy is targeting at least to four to five sessions on an average.

“Summer can be scary since there are hardly any activities for kids outdoors. Most of the parents who visited us voiced concerns over limited or no options which is when we struck upon this idea.

“We didn’t want them to fly out of UAE just to keep their kids active physically. We now have opened up option to allow their kids train in air-conditioned halls,” he said.

During the sessions, Ahmad said the kids will be undergoing several exercises that can benefit them in a big way. “Regular fitness and basketball gives kids strong muscles and bones and it controls the weight and decreases risk of developing type 2 diabetes and further gives them sound sleep.

“These sessions also makes them understand the concept of team work and develop healthy competitive environment,” he added.

MPAC Sports was established in Chicago in 2002 and has been operating in the UAE since 2007 and currently has 40 academies throughout Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah training over 2,000 plus kids every week.
