ABU DHABI An Indian engineer in Abu Dhabi has been left horrified after receiving a used knockoff phone instead of the brand new Samsung Galaxy he ordered from an online shopping portal.

Khaleef Wasif, 22, who works for a contracting firm, said he bought a Samsung Galaxy (SDuos 2) from a popular UAE-based online shopping portal.

“I was shocked when I opened the box. It was not sealed. Even worse, the phone was fake and looked used. There were scratches and pen marks on the phone and pictures of a woman in the photo folder. It is obvious it is a used phone,” said Wasif. He alleged the phone was not original but a cheap knockoff.

“The packet was delivered to me at my office last Sunday within three days of placing the order. I paid the courier Dh309 inclusive of delivery charges. But I felt cheated when I saw the phone. You cannot sell a secondhand phone as new. Isn’t there anyone verifying quality and authenticity?” he asked.

Wasif said his complaint was taken lightly by the online portal. “There was no apology of any sorts. The customer service supervisor told me they are not responsible, and will check with the seller. I bought the product from the online website and I expect them to take full responsibility,” said Wasif.
