Dubai: If you always wondered what goes on inside one of the world’s busiest airports then you may want to watch the inner workings of the Dubai International airport this Thursday. The second season of Ultimate Airport Dubai premiers on December 11 at 10pm on National Geographic HD.

The new 10-part weekly series is set to unravel new facets about what is the world’s second busiest airport by international passenger traffic. The home base of Emirates and Fly Dubai oversees 180,000 passengers travelling to over 260 destinations each day and moves nearly 2.4 million tonnes of cargo each year. The new series will showcase how the 90,000 strong staff work tirelessly to maintain the airport and overcome constant setbacks – from runway repairs to an influx of thousands of passengers to smugglers carrying illegal items.

Meeting deadlines

While airport insiders reveal what it takes to keep this international hub up and running, Airport Services teams tell how they search for a missing boy minutes before his flight is about to take off or rush transfer passengers.

Find out how a small delay can affect flights around the globe, and what tight margins of errors managers must work in while making decisions like whether to hold a plane or leave passengers behind.

Also find out how the customs team is put to the test with over 66 million passengers travelling through the airport every year. Officers divulge how they spot suspicious behaviour and bags that once led them to find 24 kg heroin.

The show also promises to take you to the “Hub,” or the Network Control Centre which has access to every Emirates plane around the globe. Get an insider’s account of how the 24-hour airport’s engineering team fixes aircraft faults on the ground and in between flights, from faulty water valves to fires on board and replacing windshields and find out what keeps Air Traffic Control on its toes, with 39 planes taking off and landing every hour.
