ABU DHABI An Abu Dhabi resident has been nominated for US-based Global Humanity Inspiration Award for her work in animal welfare.

Augusta DeLisi, 24, is one of the six finalists for the prestigious award instituted by Unite 4: Good to ‘honour humanitarian efforts that support a global, social movement fuelled by kindness.’

The finalist will be the recipient of a $50,000 grant directed towards the winner’s cause or charity of choice. “Winning the award will give me an incredible opportunity to aid the emirate’s homeless pets,” DeLisi, 24, who runs a non-profit dog rescue organisation called Augie’s Doggies Rescue in the US, told XPRESS.

DeLisi who moved to Abu Dhabi from Chicago last year, said the grant will help her establish a similar charity in Abu Dhabi. “I’m on a mission to save the lives of homeless pets in the UAE and every vote in support of my cause helps in transforming my dream into a reality,” she said.

DeLisi was nominated by DoSomething.org for her accomplishments in the field of animal rescue. She was just 12 when DeLisi set up Augie’s Doggies Rescue to save the lives of shelter dogs facing euthanasia in the US. “I spent 12 years running Augie’s Doggies in the US, and to date have found homes for 130 dogs in need,” she said.

A runoff vote which runs until February 15 will determine the winner.
