DUBAI What better place than Dubai to present a fusion of different arts, remarks Sohini Roy Chowdhury, who is presenting ‘Flamenco Natyam’- a fusion of Bharatanatyam and Flamenco - with her troupe on Friday.

Paying a tribute to the spirit of woman, eight Flamenco and Bharatanatyam dancers, seven of them Bulgarian and one Indian, will present ‘I am’, a musical recital at an Indian classical fusion concert titled ‘Inner Voyage’.

“I saw a lot of common connection between Flamenco and Bharatanatyam; the emotional depth and spontaneity of the Flamenco sort of enchanted me, when I went to Spain. That’s when I wanted to create a fusion of the two dance forms,” Sohini told XPRESS. She has been performing for almost 20 years and is also a visiting professor in at least 10 universities. Now settled in Spain, she is originally from Kolkata in India.

She said the recital will speak about woman in different forms and her diverse traits. “We will not be using traditional music for either of the dances; we will raise the speed of the Indian dance form to match that of the Flamenco. You will see a lot of blending in music, thought and also vision and any art lover would be able to relate to it.”

Sohini, who has performed worldwide, said she is eagerly looking forward to the Dubai performance. “It is a place known for the multiplicity of cultures, I feel dance lovers here would highly enjoy it,” she said.

The recital will be a curtain raiser for ‘Inner Voyage’, which is raising money for ‘The Angel Appeal’ a charitable organisation.

The concert will bring internationally acclaimed sarod maestro Ustad Aashish Khan - the son of musical genius Ali Akbar Khan, who will be accompanied by tabla legend Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and celebrity artistes such as Arijit Tagore, Dishari Chakraborty and Shiraz Ali Khan on tabla, santoor and sarod.

UAE poet Shihab Ganem will be felicitated during the concert for being the first poet from the Arab world to receive the prestigious 2013 Tagore award.
