The upward swing in Dubai's economy has attracted investments from far and wide. Even celebrities from the Indian film, fashion and food industry could not resist the city's charm as a money-spinner. But unlike most players who've chosen to ride the real estate gravy train, the celebs from India have chosen other fields to rake it in. XPRESS sniffed out those who have invested their millions and where.

Suneil Shetty

The Bollywood star, who also owns the Mischief chain of boutiques and restaurants in India, has invested in a fashion store called Crossover Bollywood Se. Located in Bur Dubai, the store sells designer labels of Indian fashion designers in addition to jewellery, footwear and a salon run by a celebrity stylist.

Manish Malhotra

The celebrated fashion designer is known for creating elaborate costumes for Bollywood blockbusters. He has received many Filmfare awards for his creations. Manish's decision to invest his money in Dubai led to the opening of his flagship store Manish Malhotra on Beach Road, opposite Mercato Mall.

Sanjeev Kapoor

The celebrity chef from India, author of many books and the host of popular cookery show Khana Khazana, set up his restaurant, Sanjeev Kapoor's Khazana, at Al Nasr Leisureland in Dubai in 1998. The restaurant was commended at the 2007 Time Out restaurant awards.

Asha Bhosle

One of the biggest names in playback singing in India, the legendary singer Asha Bhosle invested her money in a restaurant. Called Asha's, the swish restaurant is located at Pyramids in Wafi City. You can have a selection of the singer's favourites for just Dh65.

Sushmita Sen

Former Miss Universe and noted Bollywood film star Sushmita Sen owns a jewellery shop at the plush Wafi City mall. The shop, Renee Jewellers, opened in April, 1999, is run by the star's mother Subhra Sen.

Mohanlal

A big film star of the South Indian film industry, he once owned a restaurant in Karama called Mohanlal's Taste Buds. The restaurant has shut down, but Mohanlal continues to invest in Dubai through his brand of packaged foods and spices available at most supermarkets.

Bosco and Caesar

The popular Bollywood choreographers recently opened their dance academy, Bosco Caesar Dance Company (BCDC), in Dubai. Their academy offers a range of courses to professional and amateur dancers, choreographers, fitness enthusiasts and children. The company also organises corporate events.
