Dubai: Residents in gated communities like The Springs, The Greens and Meadows are doing their bit for the environment by recycling household waste into organic compost inside a bin that its designers say will not attract vermin and helps plants grow.
They are using the Bokashi system, which induces fermentation of organic matter by breaking down waste using bran infused with bacteria. It can then be used as compost packed with plant-growing nutrients.
Gaining ground
The method is gaining ground among eco-friendly expats, with around 40 people using it.
Ruksher Malek, a resident of The Springs, who runs a salon in Jumeirah, has two compost boxes to use for work and her home. "I'm interested in gardening so this really helps. It involves no chemicals and everything is natural," she said.
Janine Sheard, a distributor for the product in Dubai, said: "All you have to do is put the biodegradable waste into the bin. Then you sprinkle a layer of Bokashi bran treated with bacteria and microbes that breaks down the waste."
