Dubai: The Terry Fox Run, to be held in Dubai on April 19, has raised more than Dh10 million for 20 cancer research projects in the UAE, said Ara Sahakian, chairman of the Dubai organising committee.

largest fundraiser

According to him, the largest single-day cancer fundraiser in the world is also the largest contributor to cancer research in this country.

“Dubai is among the top three contributors in terms of fund raising as well as participation. The funds raised here have been utilised for several cancer research projects in the UAE.

Any organisation or individual wanting to take up cancer research can apply to us. We will support their project once it’s approved from Canada,” said Sahakian.

Over 8,000 people are expected to participate in next Friday’s run in Dubai Festival City. All funds generated will be donated to cancer research.

“I started after my father died of cancer. Many people participate for similar reasons. Every year a large number turn up to lend their support for cancer research,” said Sahakian, who has been associated with the Dubai Terry Fox Run since 2000. From little ones in strollers, to bikers and even people in wheelchairs - the Terry Fox Run gets an enthusiastic response from everyone.

Sahakian said people can register for the event on April 19 from 7.30am onwards.

“We are open to everyone - groups, individuals, adults, children and students There is no minimum participation fee and it is not a competition, you can walk, run, bicycle or rollerblade.”
