Get your lessons out, it’s time to go back to school. A new night at Societe Dubai in Marina Byblos Hotel, Dubai Marina, wants to take us back in time for a mid-week party that officially kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday). And they’ve got none other than the UAE’s very own cheese expert Tim Derry a.k.a. Tim Cheddar to dole out the tunes.

Covering the best tunes from years gone by, when music was real, Societe School Nights wants to give you the perfect way to end the last evening of your working week. And there’s no homework.

Soundbites got Tim Cheddar himself to tell us a little bit more:

Explain to us what the music on Societe School Nights sounds like.

The music sounds like you’ve taken a time travelling DeLorean car back to the ’80s and ’90s with party McFly. We’ll bring back your school and university days with musical memories from the time of cassette tapes and ghetto blasters. You’ll just want to dance with somebody and have the time of your life.

Why is this the perfect mid-week getaway?

With only one more school night before the weekend, you have permission to let your hair down or put it in pigtails if you’re a girl. Just make sure you’ve got a good excuse for being late the next morning.

Will there be a cool kids’ table?

You won’t get in if you’re ‘too cool for school’ so wear a smile on your face and expect to sing along to every song. We’ll save you a table if you’re coming with a few friends — just give the headmaster a call or bring a note from your mum.

Can we bring our lunch boxes, you know, just to fit in?

You won’t need your lunch boxes. You’ll find plenty of cheese on the dancefloor.

What do we wear?

Wednesday is ‘wear what you want’ night but pupils will be given gold stars for dressing in school uniform. Each week we’ll have a theme based on a school subject, one week it could be sports day so you’ll need your gym kit, the next week could be a history lesson that lets you wear a fashion disaster of the day, like legwarmers.

What were you listening to when you were at school?

I wasn’t listening to the teacher, that’s for sure. My first record was Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth on seven-inch vinyl, then at Uni I was into Oasis. The rest is a Blur!

Which was your favourite class in school and why?

Probably PE though I was a late developer and by far the smallest person in our school football team. But at least I wasn’t the last to be picked.

What tunes will we never hear on Wednesday night?

You’ll never hear classical, only classics. Everything else is fair game if you can sing and dance to it.

But what if we like a bit of Justin Bieber on a school night?

If you ask for Bieber then expect to be bullied and expelled.

Societe School Nights is on every Wednesday. There is no cover charge. Societe Dubai is open from 10pm to 3am four times a week on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with Ladies Night on Tuesdays. For table bookings, call 0503571126 or email party@societe.ae.
