If you had any doubt about the power of the power of shadow play and illusions, then be sure to check out the 90-minute show Shadowland, which will make its UAE debut on August 8 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Put together by American troupe Pilobolus Dance Company, the show — which has appeared on the Oprah Show and at the 2007 Academy Awards, will be tweaked to suit local sensibilities. In the past, reviewers have questioned whether it’s wholly family friendly as it chronicles a teenage girl and her terrifying and often violent encounters.

“In addition to adjusting our show out of respect for local cultural differences, Pilobolus has created a special finale for the show in honour of our UAE audience, which we leave as a surprise for those who attend,” said Michael Tracy, Pilobolus artistic director in a statement. The show, which is a mix of theatre, dance, circus and concert, will have 12 performances in the UAE until August 16.

“One highlight in particular to look out for is the magical live transformation of the heroine into a strange chimerical character — half girl and half dog — whose ensuing adventures comprise the story of the show, said Tracy.

Shadowland was created in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for the popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants.

“This is the original shadow theatre which has wowed almost half a million international theatre-goers and Abu Dhabi audiences can expect a colourful, big, entertaining and completely wacky evening,” said Sia.S.Far, CFO and managing partner, Alchemy Project-Entertainment, which is organising the show on behalf of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi).
