For The Love of Music: Meet the first ladies of UAE pop, rock and soul

The sixth in the live music series, FORTLOM returns to Dubai this week

It’s back. For The Love of Music, the Dubai live music platform series for aspiring and established artists to showcase their skills, is back. And this time, it’s all about girl power. Called The First Ladies, the sixth event will feature some FORTLOM alumni and a few new names who’ve been active in the UAE music scene this Wednesday at The Music Room.

Here are some of them, in their own words:

Who: Noush Like Sploosh

Plays/sings: A concoction of indie pop, electro, jazz and soul

USP (Unique Selling Proposition): Not Just a singer-songwriter, Noush is a transmedia artist whose talents span a wide spectrum. Her video for a three-act circus was the first video from a Dubai-based artist to be played on MTV Roots and was also nominated for Best Foreign Short at the Animazing spotlight festival in California.

Performing with acclaimed international cellist Jake Charkey, Noush’s act is a magical, mystical mix of graphics, sound and fun.

Who: Sasha & N1yah

Play/Sing: Sasha does R&B, pop, soul while N1yah does hip hop and rap

USP: These two ladies have talent, style and soul, with a fresh approach and positive message

Who: Sheena, Radio 1 presenter

Plays: Host of the night

USP: Sheena will bring her bubbly personality and infectious laugh to the stage as host of the event

You might just catch her showing off her own singing talent and giving us a couple of songs.

Who: Floetics

Plays/Sings: Neo soul

USP: Floetics is a collaboration of poetry, melody, and lyric; an experimental riff on rhythm and rhyme. The soulful voice of Layla and the tantalising wordplay of Dana is brought to life by a trio of amazing and established musicians: Ansar on guitar, percussionist Jerry, and Julian on bass.

Why you shouldn’t miss this act:

From reggae, rock, and funk, to a travel back in time to the speak-easy era, every song of the Floetics set is a different mood entirely.

Who: DD Foxx

Sings: A blend of pop, house and R&B

USP: Album, ‘Had To Be Me’ is released and available across all Virgin Megastores.

You will see who DD Foxx is. I don’t like to talk much about myself.

Who: DJ Trina

Plays: Old-school, R&B and hip hop and plays Arabic, retro, commercial and rock as well.

USP: Her massive variety of music from classical to Khaleeji, rock to desi (south Asian), urban to retro, Latino to electro.

She is musically versatile in her own way and has a habit of bringing that nostalgia flare into her music while adding that element of surprise.

Who: Sky Sommers

Sings: R&B

USP: Sky has been singing and writing since the age of 12 and recorded her first track when she was 15 in the UK and got her first management deal with Sony. She currently recording her debut album.

Soulful sound and unique life-relating music, a mix between Mary J Blidge and Keisha Cole.
