Beyonce’s UN Humanitarian video gets over 1b messages

Singer celebrated World Humanitarian Day on August 19

Move over, Angelina Jolie, there’s a new celebrity humanitarian in town, and she’s pretty impressive: Beyonce.

The American singer made social media history this weekend, according to the United Nations, thanks to her beautiful rendition of I Was Here at the UN headquarters in New York, released as a video on World Humanitarian Day on Sunday.

The video encouraged people to pledge to help someone in need by sharing the singer’s message: “This World Humanitarian Day I’m doing something good, somewhere, for someone else. Join Me!”

It shows Beyonce, clad in a tight white dress, singing in front of a screen showing scenes of people helping people amid war and catastrophe.

“The World Humanitarian Day 2012 campaign has made social media history by sharing more than one billion messages of hope,” the UN said in a statement.

The UN launched its campaign on August 2 to collect the messages, which were distributed yesterday in honour of humanitarian workers.

Valerie Amos, UN under secretary general for humanitarian affairs, praised Beyonce for the “amazing work” she did in taking the UN’s cause further.

“I feel like we all want to know that our life meant something and that we did something for someone else. That we spread positivity no matter how big or how small,” said Beyonce.
