The most popular polo tournament in Dubai has raised Dh280,000 to help fight hereditary eye diseases. That cash means a researcher can now work for three years in a bid to find a cure for the condition which affects more than 30 million people around the world.

The incidence of degenerative diseases of the retina in the UAE is roughly double the worldwide average, and Foresight's aim is to find a treatment within ten years.

Porsche Centre Dubai may have been the main sponsor on the day, but it was Citigroup who triumphed in the final, beating the Porsche team 2 1/2 to nil in front of a 2,500-strong crowd. Other teams included Sucden/RP International and Dubai Luxury Homes. Guests at Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club were also treated to a display of camel polo as a warm-up to the main event.

"This tournament is in its fourth year and goes from strength to strength," said Foresight's Sally Prosser. "We raise all our
own funds and we are a team of four, so we rely on volunteers and donations. There have been so many advances in the last few years and this is a crucial time in the research.

"We believe that visually-impaired people should be able to do everything that a sighted person can do."
