Shakespeare - Dubai style/classic romance retold the Dubai way
It is not a sight you see often at a park. Two men engaged in a swordfight. But that is what hundreds of picnickers at Safa Park witnessed on Friday evening.
Oblivious to the curious crowd that had gathered around them, the two men lashed out at each other, the duel ending with the dramatic death of one of the knights "in shining jeans".
Quality productions
This enactment of the sword fight between Romeo and Tybalt was the Dubai Drama Group's innovative way of promoting their forthcoming presentation of Romeo and Juliet.
"Our aim is to bring quality productions at affordable prices to the public. We decided to do a rehearsal in the park to create awareness about our latest production and to encourage more people to come to the theatre," said producer Dylan Dolan.
Love story
The Dubai Drama Group (DDG) is a non-profit amateur theatre group with members of all ages and nationalities.
In association with the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC), the DDG will present Shakespeare's classic love story at the Centrepoint Theatre, in the Mall of the Emirates on March 2 and 3.
Tickets, priced at Dh50, are available at the DUCTAC box office.
Cheap tickets
"We chose Romeo and Juliet because it is part of the curriculum in most schools here and what better way for students to understand and enjoy it than to see a live performance on stage, said Kemsley Dichinson, director of the play and chairman of the DDG.
"We have tried to create an amalgamation of the old and new, classical and contemporary to make it appealing to both younger audiences as well as more attuned theatre-goers."
"We are grateful for the support we have received from DUCTAC and Special Project Design, who have designed the sets, said Dichinson .
"Our members have worked very hard to present a quality production and our ticket prices are the cheapest you can get in Dubai. We hope that people will come in large numbers and support this production."
