Graduates of the American University of Sharjah (AUS) are confident of finding employment amidst a global recession because of the high quality of their education, it was revealed last week at the winter graduation ceremony.

More than 470 graduate and undergraduate students were conferred their certificates by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and President of AUS.

A warm welcome

Computer science graduate Yasser Al Jundi said he thinks AUS graduates will be welcomed by the UAE job market. "I am optimistic about finding a job, I think the market will welcome us graduates because of the high quality of our education," said the former chairman of the electrical and electronics engineering student club.

Similarly, Amani Al Nasser, a finance and management graduate, already has a few interviews lined up thanks to the university's business school, which holds students' CVs to be handed out to companies looking for fresh talent — ultimately assisting in the job hunt.

However, the work experience she gained at the universities administration and testing centre may have something to do with her confidence in finding employment. "The best thing about university was working in it part-time for two-and-a-half years. It gave me more confidence as a person," she said.

Wise decisions

Chancellor Dr Peter Heath encouraged graduating students to work individually towards improving world affairs. He told graduates: "If each of us individually works towards improving the quality of our society and the world we live, then all of us will be able to make a difference."

Heath went on to say at present the world has unlimited opportunities compared to any time in human history, yet it is still riddled with problems. The solutions to which lie with current and future generations.

He said it is therefore their responsibility as future players in the world game to make wise decisions for future generations.

Student-elected graduate speaker Noor Omran Al Nuaimi encouraged her peers to make conscious choices, as they embark on their future endeavours.

She stressed the importance of making decisions "which will reflect our characters as socially responsible and intellectual beings," and global citizens, irrespective of the nations to which each individual belongs.
