Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi Police have fined 13,000 motorists for jumping red traffic signals in the emirate of Abu Dhabi last year, a statement from the police said Tuesday.
Jumping the red traffic signals at intersections also caused accidents. Violators who own light vehicles are fined Dh1,000 with 12 black points and seizure of the car for 30 days, whereas trucks drivers get a fine of Dh3,000 and their driving licence is also suspended for a year.
Brigadier Ahmad Al Shehhi, deputy director of the traffic patrol directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police said, about six per cent the cause of road accidents were attributed to jumping red traffic signals last year and it happened because motorists failed to pay attention, swerved from the road, oversped at intersections to get the green signal [or crossed it before it turns red]. These all factors led to accidents, he said.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, reduce the speed at the intersections, which give good control of the vehicle and stop when the signal turns red.
