Dubai: A jobless woman was jailed for five years after she was convicted of possessing banned mind-altering substances.
Drug enforcement officers raided the 29-year-old Filipina’s flat and apprehended her and her boyfriend [whose identity remained undisclosed] in May following an informant’s tipoff.
Court records show she provided some of the drugs to her boyfriend when they met at her residence and consumed the banned substance.
As her house was searched, drug officers found tiny quantities of amphetamine and methamphetamine hidden in a sunglasses’ case.
The Filipina and her boyfriend were taken into custody at Dubai Police’s antinarcotics department.
The Dubai Court of First Instance slapped the Filipina a fine of Dh20,000 for possessing 0.8gm of methamphetamine, consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine and facilitating her boyfriend also to consume the mind-affecting substances.
The boyfriend was tried for consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court.
When the defendant appeared in court, she admitted that she had supplied her boyfriend with the banned substances for consumption.
An anti-narcotics police lieutenant said they raided the Filipina’s residence following an informant’s tipoff.
“We were alerted that she possessed and consumed drugs at her flat," the Dubai police lieutenant testified.
"After obtaining prosecutors’ permission to search and arrest her, we raided her residence. Another man happened to be present in the flat during the raid … upon searching the premises, we found banned substances hidden in a sunglasses’ case.
"We arrested the Filipino couple and took them to the anti-narcotics department for a drug test," the officer added.
"During questioning, the man said the woman had supplied him with methamphetamine that he consumed at the flat. The accused admitted that she got the banned substances from a third suspect, who remained at large.
"The seized mind-affecting substances were wrapped in small nylon sacks that are commonly found with drug distributors and traffickers,” the lieutenant testified.
The Filipina tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The accused will be deported following the completion of her punishment.
