Dubai: Over 6.8 million passengers used Dubai International Airport in May, with passenger traffic at the airport rising by 1.9 per cent compared to the 6.7 million recorded in May 2016.
The figure brings the total number of passengers using the airport in the first five months of 2017 to nearly 37 million passengers, up 6.7 per cent year-on-year, according to data issued by operator Dubai Airports on Monday.
South America was the fastest growing region in May, with traffic rising by 60 per cent, followed by routes to Eastern Europe, which recorded a year-on-year rise of 15.5 per cent.
In terms of passenger volumes, India topped all countries, with a total of 1.03 million passengers, followed by Saudi Arabia (508,613 passengers), the UK (451,540 passengers), and Pakistan (354,924 passengers).
The top cities for passenger traffic were London, Mumbai and Jeddah.
Meanwhile, flight movements totalled 34,544, a drop of 2.3 per cent compared to the 35,369 movements recorded in May 2016.
Freight volumes at Dubai International rose in May by 2.6 per cent over May 2016 to reach 232,884 tonnes.
During the first five months of the year, cargo handled at the airport totalled around 1.1 million tonnes, up 3 per cent compared to the same period in 2016.
